Nearly 800 people attended Paper2018 at the Lotte New York Palace in New York City March 11-13. Co-hosted by the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the National Paper Trade Association (NPTA), this annual event is where the paper industry meets.
Registrants networked, participated in Official Paper2018 Suite meetings and were invited to join sessions on timely topics. Monday’s Paper Industry Leadership Forum featured a panel of industry CEOs – Mike Doss of Graphic Packaging International, Mark Gardner of Sappi North America, Tom O’Connor, Jr. of Mohawk, Andrew Wallach of Central National Gottesman and Pete Watson of Greif, Inc. – who discussed the challenges and opportunities of adapting to disruption. The global disruptors they covered – such as technology, geo-politics and demographics – were prefaced by Dr. Frank Newport of Gallup. AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman moderated the discussion.
On Tuesday morning, John Maine, RISI vice president of global graphic papers, gave the market outlook for printing-writing papers at the RISI Global Printing-Writing Papers Market Trends Session. Ken Waghorne, RISI vice president of global packaging, discussed trends in paper-based packaging and recovered fiber during the RISI Global Paper-based Packaging and Recovered Fiber Trends Session.
The Paper2018 Luncheon featured world-class musician Billy McLaughlin, who shared his personal story of overcoming a disruptive event – his struggle with focal dystonia – and impressed the audience with his guitar-playing skills. Tom O’Connor, Jr., CEO and chairman of Mohawk, received the 2018 NPTA Stanley O. Styles Industry Excellence Award for his leadership and contributions to the industry over his more than 30-year career.
Paper2018 was a success thanks to the participation and contributions of the Paper2018 sponsors, Official Paper2018 Suite holders and AF&PA members.
We look forward to welcoming our members at Paper2019, which will be held in Chicago March 24-26, 2019.
