Facilitating Paper Recycling – It Starts With Us

At Dart Container, we strongly believe robust recycling programs are essential to reducing landfill waste and keeping the environment clean and beautiful for future generations. That’s why we work so closely with our partners across the country to make recycling easier and more accessible.

Yet, many of the1,600 employees at our headquarters don’t have access to regular curbside recycling pickup for their paper and cardboard. And many of those who do have pickup are charged a fee.

In October 2015, we opened a new drive-through recycling facility at our Mason, Michigan headquarters as part of a campus-wide recycling expansion. The center allows our Mason employees to easily drop off their household paper products – including magazines and corrugated cardboard. The center not only gives our Mason employees access to free, convenient paper recycling, but it helps us spread our culture of recycling to their families.

The center saves money for those employees who would otherwise have to pay for curbside pickup to divert recyclable paper from landfills. Providing our employees with opportunities to act on the sustainability principles we champion also benefits those in the paper and wood products industry, who gain greater credibility as responsible stewards of the environment and our natural resources.

We collected nearly 93,000 pounds of paper products for recycling in the Employee Recycling Center’s first three months. We are exploring the feasibility of establishing similar employee recycling centers at our other facilities across the country.

Dart Container received the 2016 AF&PA Leadership in Sustainability Award for Paper Recovery for Recycling for its Dart Container Employee Recycling Center.
